Pressure plate cutout problems with HIE infrared film.

This photo was taken using a Canon EOS Rebel S II camera with Kodak HIE black and white high-speed infrared film, and it illustrates a problem the camera has with this type of film.

First off, I admit it isn’t a very good photo (it’s a man dressed up as the Caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland, but the contrast makes it hard to see his painted face) but it seemed a reasonable example of the problem - you’ll notice a dark shadowed area in the upper right-hand corner of the photo.

Second, the problem varied from image to image on the same roll. Some photos had a really pronounced dark area like this and others didn’t. It all depends on the kind of light that happens to be hitting that portion of the image.

The causes for this problem are outlined in my EOS and IR FAQ, in the “myths” section.
