This is a basic feature comparison between two camera models - the Canon EOS 30D and the Canon EOS 5D.

Canon EOS 30D:

The confusingly named 30D was essentially a lightly upgraded 20D. It's mostly the same as the 20D in basic ways, but with some handy improvements. These include a larger LCD, faster overall operation, spot metering, Picture Style and two shooting speeds. I say it's confusingly named because an early Canon EOS digital camera was the very different EOS D30.

Canon EOS 5D:

The EOS 5D was, at the time of its introduction, the most affordable full-frame digital SLR ever made. It fits an interesting middle ground between the 1 series of heavy pro cameras and the 20D, which was the best advanced amateur camera sold by Canon at the time. The 5D is larger than 20D but keeps its advanced amateur dial interface, rather than the 1 series button interface. It also gains a larger viewfinder and loses the built-in flash as a result.

Interchangeable viewfinder screens available for the Canon EOS 30D:

None are available from Canon, and the camera is not sold as having interchangeable focus screens. Third party screens are available from Haoda Fu and Katz Eye. These are two entrepreneurs based in the US who provide compatible third party microprism and split collar screens for certain digital EOS cameras.

One advantage of the 30D is that its autofocus marks are not superimposed onto the focus screen directly, so you retain the focus marks in the viewfinder if you replace the focus screen. However, partial metering is affected by the custom screens, and can be out by as much as a stop.

Interchangeable viewfinder screens available for the Canon EOS 5D:

Two available from Canon - grid precision matte Ee-D and super precision matte Ee-S. Not compatible with 1 series screens. Manual focus split circle screens available from Brightscreen.com or Haoda Fu.

Custom functions for the Canon EOS 30D:

19 with 53 settings.
1) SET function when shooting. No function, change quality, change parameters, menu display, image replay.
2) Noise reduction for long exposure off/auto/on.
3) Flash sync speed in AV mode - auto, 1/250 sec. (fixed).
4) Shutter button/AE lock button. AF/AE lock, AE lock/AF, AF/AF lock (no AE lock), AE/AF (no AE lock).
5) AF-assist beam. Emits, does not emit, only external flash emits.
6) Exposure level increments. 1/3 stop, 1/2 stop.
7) Flash. Fires/does not fire.
8) ISO speed extension. On/off.
9) Bracketing sequence/auto cancel. 0 - + enable, 0 - + disable, - 0 + enable, - 0 + disable.
10) Superimposed display. On/off.
11) Menu display position. Previous/top if powered off, previous, top.
12) Mirror lockup. Disable/enable.
13) AF point selection. Normal, multi-controller (joystick), quick control dial.
14) E-TTL II flash. Evaluative/centre-weighted averaging.
15) Shutter curtain sync. First, second curtain.
16) Safety shift. Disable, enable.
17) Magnified view. Image playback only, image review and playback.

Custom functions for the Canon EOS 5D:

1) SET button functionality when shooting. 0: Default (does nothing) 1: Change image quality from various JPEG options and RAW (probably most useful for most people). 2: Change Picture Style. 3: Display menu. 4: Image replay.
2) Long exposure noise reduction. This function cuts a lot of hot pixel noise during long bulb exposures, but can take the same length of time to process as the exposure itself. 0: Off. 1: Auto noise reduction for exposures of 1 second or longer. 2: On.
3) Flash sync speed in Av mode. 0: Auto. 1: 1/200 sec (fixed)
4) Shutter button/AE lock button. The famous CF4, allowing you to alter the functionality of the * button on the back panel. 0: AF/AE lock. 1: AE lock / AF. 2: AF/AF lock, no AE lock. 3: AE/AF, no AE lock
5) AF assist beam on external shoemount flash units. 0: Fires. 1: Does not fire.
6) Exposure level increments. 0: 1/3 stop. 1: 1/2 stop.
7) External flash on hotshoe or PC terminal. 0: Fires. 1: Does not fire.
8) ISO expansion. When enabled, permits ISO settings of 50 (L) and 3200 (H). 0: Off. 1: On.
9) Bracket.sequence/auto cancel. Bracket sequence determines the order of the normal photo, the under photo and the over photo. Auto-cancel disables AEB at the end of a sequence. Decide carefully if you want this on or off, as it's easy to think you're still bracketing when in fact auto-cancel has disabled the function. 0: 0,-,+ (enabled). 1: 0,-,+ (disabled) 2: ,0,+ (enabled) 3: ,0,+ (disabled)
10) Superimposed display: display active AF point or points in the viewfinder. 0: On. 1: Off.
11) Menu button display position. 0: Previous (top if powered down) menu. 1: Previous menu. 2: Top menu.
12) Mirror lockup. When enabled, one press of the shutter button locks up the mirror in order to prevent vibrations from mirror motion blurring the photo. A second press takes the photo. 0: Disable. 1: Enable.
13) AF point selection method. 0: Normal, main control dial. 1: Multi-controller and AF point button selects auto. 2: rear dial
14) E-TTL II flash metering pattern. 0: Evaluative. 1: Averaging.

16) Safety shift in Av or Tv modes. 0: Disable. 1: Enable. Auto-shift exposure if subject brightness changes suddenly.
17) AF point activation area. 0: Standard. 1: Expanded. Activate 6 invisible AF points within the spot metering circle in AI Servo mode.
18) When in LCD display: return to shooting mode. 0: With shutter button half-pressed only. 1: Returns to shoot with * and a variety of other buttons.
19) Lens AF stop button function. This button is only found on some larger Canon telephoto lenses. 0: AF stop. 1: AF start. 2: AE lock while metering. 3: AF point: M to Auto/Auto to centre. 4: One Shot or AI Servo. 5: IS start
20) Add original decision data for use with optional data verification kit. 0: Off. 1: On.
00) Focusing screen. Adjust for the metering characteristics of optional interchangeable viewfinder screens. 0: Ee-A, standard Precision Matte. 1: Ee-D, Precision Matte with grid. 2: Ee-S, Super Precision Matte.

Product names

A note about names. The reason certain camera bodies may have multiple names is because Canon often use different model names for different regional markets. This usually applies only to consumer and some midrange products, and mainly to the USA and Japan. Whereas the international name is usually just a number or number/letter combination, the USA name will often be some cool or tough-sounding name such as “Rebel”. Canon Japan, on the other hand, typically use cute marketing names such as “Kiss” for their consumer products. Under certain rare circumstances there may be actual differences between the differently named products. For example, Japanese versions of the product may support wireless remotes whereas other versions may not.

I generally organize the information by the European/Australasian name, since it’s usually a logical numeric system. Basically, the fewer the digits the more expensive the camera. Thus the 1000 cameras are consumer, the 100 cameras are advanced amateur, the 10, 5 and 3 cameras are semi-professional and the 1 cameras are professional. The terms “consumer” and “professional” aren’t judgement terms here - just Canon’s descriptions of the market segments to which the cameras are aimed.
