Aspect ratio.
The ratio of height to width of a rectangle. Images with a wide aspect ratio are wider than they are tall. Images with a tall aspect ratio are taller than they are wide.
35mm film has an aspect ratio of 2:3. (24x36mm and sometimes called 1.5:1) Television usually has an aspect ratio of 4:3 (1.33:1) and some digital cameras use this aspect ratio as well. High definition television (HDTV) uses a ratio of 9:16 (1.78:1) , which is one of the aspect ratios supported by APS film.
