Gobo.
From go-between. A mask of some kind, placed between a light source and the subject or a background or whatever.
Gobos are sheets of wood, paper, metal, cardboard, painted glass, etc. with various patterns cut out of them. They thus project interesting patterns or textures of light.
They can also be used to project symbols or letters or whatnot onto a subject - such gobos are sometimes called cookies or cukalorises.
