Frames per second.
The number of image frames in a roll-based autowinding film camera that can be successfully exposed in a second. Low-end 35mm cameras typically handle 1 fps, midrange around 4-5 and pro cameras with boosters up to 10.
The term is also used in motion picture photography. Most movie cameras shoot at 24 fps, though some specialized cameras such as IMAX cameras shoot at a higher frame rate for smoother motion.
cf. booster, motor drive, power winder.
