Negative fill.

Using a panel of some dark light-absorbing material when lighting a subject to create shadows, etc.

Though logically meaningless, it’s a common enough and convenient way of describing the effect of placing a dark panel next to a subject, just out of camera view. The panel prevents light from reflecting off walls, etc., back onto the subject.

Entry last updated . Term 829 of 1487.

Previous term: negative carrier.

Next term: neutral.
