Photographic paper often comes in a range of contrast levels; useful for different effects. Typically 0 or 00 is soft (low) contrast, 5 is very hard (high contrast) and 2 is normal. These numbers are just guides, however, and not firm standards. Every manufacturer has its own interpretation of what these numbers mean.
