The PhotoNotes.org Dictionary of Film and Digital Photography.

-----

Professional.

1. Someone who does something such as photography in order to earn a livelihood. Usually carries implications of competence and expertise.

cf. amateur, build quality, consumer.

2. A product, such as a camera or lens, built to a high quality standard and marketed as a product appropriate for professional use. Though the term is frequently used, misused and abused with great abandon by many manufacturers, in the case of reputable makers “professional” usually has some legitimate meaning. Professional cameras and lenses, while not always marked such, are generally much sturdier and offer higher optical quality. And of course you pay more accordingly.

cf. build quality, professional film.

Entry last updated 2002-05-02. Term 968 of 1487.

Previous term: processing.

Next term: professional film.
