Rectangular pixels.

Pixels with a non-square aspect ratio.

Many computers have rectangular pixels because they use video technology derived from television, where such pixels are common. However rectangular pixels are undesirable for digital imaging because circles turn into ellipses when rotated 90 degrees. Some image sensors used by some digital cameras also have rectangular pixels. Some of these cameras output rectangular pixels but others use software interpolation and output square pixels.

cf. image sensor, pixel, square pixels.
