Zeiss.

German optics manufacturer Carl Zeiss.

The Zeiss company was responsible for many important technical breakthroughs in optical design, such as the Tessar lens design and multicoated lenses.

It was also well known, at least before the rise of the Nazis, for its relatively unusual concern for social issues - particularly worker compensation and fair treatment in large part thanks to Zeiss director Ernst Abbe. Following the second world war the company was broken up. The Soviet Union took over much of the Zeiss manufacturing base in Jena and the firm was split into two companies - east and west. The two firms were recombined in 1991, following the reunification of Germany.

cf. Abbe number, coating, Contax, T*, Tessar lens.

Entry last updated 2002-05-09. Term 1323 of 1487.

Previous term: Young-Helmholtz theory.

Next term: zoetrope.
