Hello,
I am wondering if you use a good brand vs. an aftermarket brand memory card, could that possibly affect quality of pictures?

Generally, no.
In the case of analogue information, like videotapes or cassettes, then quality directly affects the final result. But digital data means the information is either there or it isn't. So faulty digital media can result in the loss of information, but generally won't result in the degradation of information.
Quality digital media basically means you're paying for improved reliability and, in the case of flash memory particularly, in speed of response time and in capacity.

Brand doesn't matter, but if you are planning on shooting video or taking rapid pics one after another, make sure it's a class 8 or above.

Max.

just the class.. the camera has a specific read write speed to save the pix on the card.
if your camera can do vids, you want an sd card that can read as fast as your camera can write.

For still photographs.

No !

I have the cheapest no name memory cards, and some of the most expensive brand cards.

I have experienced no difference in photo quality at all.

If you are new to digital photography. You will learn in time, the importance of a fast card.

The only difference you will notice with a fast card when using it for still photography is that the buffer will clear faster. Unless you are taking lots of rapid fire photos, this won't be an issue.

Exactly !

It all depends on your chosen photographic subject.

If you are more of a landscape, scenic, or portraiture photographer. A cheaper slower card will be perfectly satisfactory.

My main subject is wild life, and in particular, birds in flight.

For this. A faster card is essential. Or any fast moving action, where you need to take a rapid succession of photos.

In my earlier days, of photography. I can remember how frustrating it was, to shoot a series of rapid fire photos. Only to miss the next event, due to having to wait for the writing on the memory card to finish.

Speed costs money as we know. But is very well worth the extra cost.
