This is a little broad since you haven't told us what your main shooting interests are.
Having said that I wasn't so sure myself few years ago when I started:)
So here's few of my tips:
1) Don't spend a fortune on equipment. An L lens will not make you a better photographer. go with a 50mm prime; later you can decide if you need something wider or something longer.
2) Read the manual and understand how your camera works. If you want to achieve an effect you'll need to know how to set your camera to make it happen.
3) Befriend a photographer (looks like you've already done that). Very Happy
4) Practice!! Take houndreds, thousands of pictures and remember to have fun doing it!
