Hello,
I'm a beginner. I've been using a Fuji S7000 for a while but I've recently decided to make the leap to an SLR. I'm going to go with a 400D, but I've read very mixed reviews of its 18-55mm kit lens: the consensus seems to be that it's good for the money, but still bad. I don't have a lot to spend, so I've resigned myself to having to use a cheapie lens, but I do rather wonder whether or not a different cheapie lens might be better than the kit lens?
I've been looking at these, and I wondered if anyone could advise as to whether they're better than the kit lens or not really worth the extra money:
28-105 f4-5.6 USM
28-90 f4-5.6 III
These lenses are all in the 'category 1' cheapies mentioned in the beginner faq, but I figured that for the small additional expense they might be sensible upgrades. That said, I'm also not sure if their minimum focussing distances might not be a bit far away to make them good for use as general purpose lenses?
Any advice would be most appreciated! Thanks in advance. |

| Given these alternatives I'd stick with the kit lens. |

Really? Ok. I figured that since the kit lens is only sold as a kit lens, it might be super-cheapie!
I actually found a second hand 55-200mm f4.5-5.6 II USM for £90 so I've picked that up too. Another cheapie, I know, but it'll be nice to have options.
Thanks for the advice. |

Good for starters on the budget. Last lens i'd pick up is 50mm f1.8. Sharp, lightweight and good for portraits, throws off the background nicely. |

Yup, that's already on my list I want a lens for band photography and I figure that's the best choice on my budget. I would have preferred the 1.4 but it's just too expensive!
Thanks again. I'm sure I'll be back when everything arrives! The articles here are by far the best I've found so far -- they've been exceptionally informative. |
