In most respects this lens is a step up from either of the 50mm 1.8 lenses. It gives a tiny bit more light wide open, gives you quiet USM focusing and has very pleasant and soft bokeh.
However, it doesn't use true ring USM - it has a sort of hybrid clutch mechanism with micromotor USM. A lot of people report that this mechanism fails easily, which ends up being rather expensive. It's also somewhat soft wide open.
When it works, it's a great lens. On a subframe digital SLR it's more useful as a portrait lens than a walkaround lens, however. |
