Can anyone help me

I have been using a 350D for about two years now with mixed results. I also have a 430EX flash, when the 350 is connected to the 430 the results are very good, especially using my 25 - 105 L lense.

I have just got a new 40D and I am trying to get the camera to control the flash directly, I understand that this is possible with this combination.

The problem is that whan I try to change any settings on the flash using the camera menu only the bottom two options are available in the menu. The top three items are greyed out, I can therefore not change the FEL or 1st curtain sync from the camera and have to use the Cn.f settings on the flash.

If I come up one level in the camera menu I have the option of clearing the Cn.f setting on an external flash but when I try to use this option I get a message saying

"The flash is either incompatable or switched off"

If I press the "inf" button on the flash control menu I get the option here of reseting the speedlight and this works fine.

Has anyone else had a similar problem or have I got one of the settings on the camera or flash set wrong

Thanks in advance

Tony

That only works with the new 580EX mk II flash, unfortunately. I have the 580 mk 1, and it doesn't work with that either.
