A very popular lens right now, partly because of its newness and partly because it's got a very desirable list of features.

- It's got a really convenient focal length range, making it a perfect walkaround lens for a full-frame camera. On a 1.6x subframe camera it's okay at 24mm, but not quite as convenient, starting at an equivalent to a 38mm lens on a fullframe.

- It's f/4 all the way across. Which isn't as nice as 2.8, but it's not bad.

- It's got IS so you gain 2-3 stops of handholdability.

- It's relatively compact and light for an L series lens.

- It has your usual L series good stuff - weatherproofing, a solid build quality, excellent optics.

- But it's not cheap, and the price is holding fairly steadily right now because everybody wants one.

- A handful of early models were recalled by Canon for poor flare resistance, but this apparently hasn't been a huge problem. And if it is, Canon will fix it for you anyway.
