Gruppo Manfrotto are a well-known Italian manufacturer of tripods, lighting stands and related equipment. They market their products globally but have, since 1970, had an exclusive distribution deal with Bogen Imaging in the USA. But for some mysterious and really irritating reason Bogen chose to renumber all the Manfrotto products they sold in the US under the Bogen/Manfrotto name.
Naturally this can be confusing as hell in the day and age of the Internet and international travel. For example, I live in the UK right now, but am looking for a replacement part for a tripod I bought when I was living in the USA. And even though Bogen and Manfrotto are now owned by the same company (the UK based Vitec Group holding company) most of the Manfrotto products are still sold in the US with a different numbering scheme from the rest of the world. Newer products, since perhaps the late 90s or so, appear to have universal numbering, but the old numbers still persist in the US. The whole mess is even more confusing since the numbers don't make any kind of logical sense - they're just random numbers as far as I can tell. A logical structure to the numbers, indicating where products fall within a given product lineup, would be most welcome.
I was finding this quite aggravating when I was researching my next tripod purchase. As far as I can tell, neither Bogen nor Manfrotto list equivalent product numbers on their Web sites. (though I'd be happy to be corrected on this)
Eventually I came across some handy tables compiled in the 1990s by Andrew McLachlan (MCLACHLA@tui.lincoln.ac.nz) from New Zealand and Martin Finset (martinf@idt.unit.no) from Norway. I have taken these tables as a starting point and updated them extensively for the current (2006) product lineup. Hopefully it's reasonably accurate, though there were a load of typos in the US/Bogen catalogue, so who knows?
